The Special Supplemental Food
Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides basic nutritious foods
to pregnant women, infants, and children under five
years of age.
To participate in the WIC
Program, pregnant women, postpartum and breast-feeding mothers, infants, and
children under five must meet income guidelines and have a nutritional
need. A nurse or nutritionist determines nutritional need through a
health screening.
WIC participants receive
vouchers which can be redeemed for prescribed foods at designated grocery stores
or pharmacies. WIC participants also receive nutrition education and
counseling. WIC provides foods rich in protein, iron, calcium, and
vitamins A and C.
The Gibson and Posey
County WIC Program is administered by G.C.A.R.C.
